The Core Question

"Who am I when no one is watching?"

"Man is condemned to be free; because once thrown into the world, he is responsible for everything he does."

Jean-Paul Sartre

The Story

Elena is good at parties. She knows exactly when to laugh, how long to hold eye contact, which stories make her seem interesting but not intimidating. But tonight, staring at her reflection in the bathroom mirror, she doesn't recognize herself anymore. Explore the existentialist question of authentic living.

About This Experience

This experience follows Elena through a crisis of authenticity at a company gala. On the surface, she has it all together—the perfect dress, the right words, the smile that puts everyone at ease. But beneath the performance, she's drowning. Her marriage is failing, she hasn't slept in weeks, and she's lost touch with who she really is.

Existentialism confronts us with the burden and freedom of self-creation. We are not born with a fixed essence—we create ourselves through our choices. But this freedom is terrifying, and most of us flee from it into what Sartre called "bad faith": pretending we have no choice, hiding behind roles and expectations, becoming what others want us to be.

Elena's story explores what happens when the mask becomes unbearable. Through your choices, you'll navigate the tension between the safety of performance and the terror of authenticity. Some paths lead to liberation. Others lead to deeper hiding. The experience doesn't judge—it illuminates the cost of each choice.

🌌About Existentialism

Existentialism emerged in the 19th and 20th centuries as a response to traditional philosophy's focus on abstract systems. Instead, existentialists insisted on starting with concrete human existence—the lived experience of being a person facing choices, mortality, and meaning.

Key figures include Søren Kierkegaard (who emphasized the individual's subjective relationship to truth), Friedrich Nietzsche (who proclaimed the death of God and the need to create our own values), Jean-Paul Sartre (who declared that "existence precedes essence"), and Simone de Beauvoir (who applied existentialist insights to gender and oppression).

Central themes include freedom and responsibility, authenticity and bad faith, anxiety and meaning. Existentialists generally hold that there is no pre-given human nature or cosmic purpose—we must create meaning through our choices and commitments.

Reflection Prompts

After completing this experience, consider journaling on these questions:

In what areas of your life do you perform rather than simply be?

What would people be surprised to learn about the "real" you?

What are you afraid would happen if you dropped the mask?

Where in your life are you pretending you have no choice when you actually do?
